THE GLASS BEAD GAME, a novel
While at work I won a USA OLYMPIC Travel bag for my proficient sales. Hurrah! What a nice pat on the back.
I shared a quaint lunch with Beth Neroda at Monica’s. I ate a bacon, lettuce and tomato (with avocado) sandwich. Beth ordered a bowl of chili. It was fun. Beth can be half-way decent (at times). She’s married but she seems to complain a lot over nonsense. She is going to transferring out of the RASC (Residence Account Service Center) in mid-December to another department. I shall remain here in the RASC (for now). Lucky me (I’m being sarcastic). I cannot wait until I get word on the recent job transfers that I’ve submitted. At around two o’clock today I received a phone call from Steve Sicarra.
“Hey Mike, I’m working in this area of the East Bay right now.”
“Really…well I’m on Webster Street.”
He ended up driving up in front of my building and we cruised around Downtown Oakland during my afternoon break. He parked his van and we talked for a while. He’s really a nice guy but I can’t help but wonder what his motives may be. Does he like me? He must. I like him, too.
I asked, “Why don’t we go to a movie this Friday night?”
He didn’t exactly say no. He didn’t exactly say yes. It’s too bad he lives so far away in that Los Gatos area. Our movie outing may still be possible.
I said, “This work van is so big. I don’t know how you can drive it.”
He laughed, “I got used to it.”
He seemed so shy and with few words to share. I decided to open up about George Jones once again (since he does know him).
“I had a little episode with George last Tuesday night,” I announced freely.
I explained what had happened and he surprised me when he asked, “Is there anything going on with you and Tammy?”
“Oh no, not really,” I hesitated, “We’re only friends.”
I thought of Paloma and realized that she is a whole other story; however, the beautiful subject of Paloma didn’t come up in our conversation. It’s just as well. Why complicate matters?I explained what had happened and he surprised me when he asked, “Is there anything going on with you and Tammy?”
“Oh no, not really,” I hesitated, “We’re only friends.”
I ate some lasagna at mom’s house for dinner while I watched ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT. I learned about a new film that Barbra Streisand is working on called YENTL. I’ll probably watch the interview that Geraldo Rivera will have with her on 20/20 tonight.
Paloma telephoned. I learned that her telephone number is out-of-order.
“I can call repair service for you.”
“Okay, that would be good.”
Their phone service problem should be cleared by six o’clock tomorrow evening. Our tentative movie date was cancelled. I presume that our date for Saturday night is still “ON” though.
I called Steve in Alhambra Valley at his telephone number: 408-268-1140. “I can call repair service for you.”
“Okay, that would be good.”

Steve said, “I’m staying at my mom’s house for the time being.”
I figured he deserved a return phone call for stopping by to see me at work today. I cannot get over the kindness of this gentleman. I like his mellow good-natured mannerisms. While we talked we made arrangements to meet midway in Hayward at the Southland Mall Cinemas for a movie outing. We’ll surely have a good time. Now it’s time for the Barbra Streisand interview. And then it will be ‘beddie-bye’ for me.
At any rate he took pains to win me over from the very first. Why he did it, why he bothered with me, I cannot say. I think men of his sort usually do such things unconsciously, as a kind of reflex.
