The Beginnings – Part 134:   I FOUND A TREASURE

Monday, November 14, 1983

I won a dart board (with darts) at work today.

I made attempts at calling Paloma but there was no answer.   Work flew by quickly.

I arrived home, feeling tired after my long day. I called Paloma once again.
Paloma asked, “Why don’t you come here to watch TV.”
I accepted her offer and drove out to the Berkeley Hills.   I met a guy named Darius who lives under the main house.   I also met the fifteen year old spoiled-brat named Lisa (aren’t all fifteen year old girls like that?)   I also met Lisa’s mom, Bonnie, who seemed very nice.   Paloma has been residing with them for the past year.  Paloma is the au pair (nanny).

Paloma and I watched THE EYES OF LAURA MARS.   I love that movie.

Paloma shared some photographs.  I chose one of her, wearing a turquoise bathing suit.
“You look so sexy in this one,” I said.
She smiled.
I saw a picture of my competition as well.   It was a photograph of someone named Matt…or something like that.   He’s the alcoholic who is continuously calling her.   Paloma actually admitted that she was going out with him on Friday night.   I didn’t need to know that; however, we may go to see a movie on Thursday night.   She may drive over to visit me tomorrow night (Wednesday).   I’ll have to wait and see if this comes true.   It seems too good to be true.   We had a great time tonight.   We lounged around in her bedroom.  She has a waterbed.   We looked out at her bedroom window view and kissed and caressed.   I love holding her until she said something about my having this very ‘distrustful look’.   Did it show?

Paloma knew that I had overheard her conversation with Matt.
Paloma said, “I love you.”
She apparently cares for this guy very deeply ‘as a friend’ and feels the intimacy (whatever there was for the past year) is over.   This is what she has claimed anyway.   I feel jealous.   I can’t help it.
Paloma said, “Anyway, I found a TREASURE.”
I was thrilled to hear that as she was referring to me as the ‘treasure’.   I felt much more confident about our relationship.
She surprised me when she confided in me by saying, “I used to take heroin when I lived in Paris…but that was a long time ago.”
I decided to NOT hold it against her.   How can one hold a mistake of one’s past against them?   I really think I’m falling in love.   Now that I have her picture, wearing that turquoise bathing suit, my feelings are reinforced.

I returned home and I found my brother, John, watching the sports highlights from the local news channel.   I decided to turn-in for the night.   I wanted to dream of Paloma.   Is she my long, lost love?   I’m looking forward to her suggestion of a foursome date between me, Paloma, Monika and Chris in Lake Tahoe during Thanksgiving Weekend.   That idea sounds really good to me.

It’s very private being a writer.  It’s like a bodily function, apparently, intimate and almost sacred.
